How I Started Making Giant Flowers
From Shopping Mall Display to Album Cover
I started creating oversized flowers in late 2023, with this pink and white set pictured below. I’d always dabbled in creating flowers—whether it was through paper, felt, or my own homegrown blooms, so with that background, I had a pretty good understanding of floral anatomy, and the thought of scaling them up to something bigger and more impactful was really exciting. When I got the brief to create a spring campaign for a shopping mall, I couldn’t wait to dive in and create something larger-than-life.
The first set of giant flowers felt like a creative turning point for me. Seeing them come to life, knowing they were going to bring joy and a little sense of wonder, was such a rewarding experience.
After the mall campaign, they’ve been used at business retreats, parties, and have been featured on the cover of NZ musician Chaii’s latest album! The flowers later made an appearance at Chaii’s launch party at a nightclub, it was so cool seeing them take over such a different setting.
And most recently, this set found a new audience on stage at a local high school art and cultural evening, It’s been so fun to see them make their mark in so many different spaces.
These flowers are where it all began, and they’ll always hold a special place in my heart. They def symbolize the beginning of a new chapter and direction for The Pretty Collective, one where oversized blooms bring a magical and unexpected twist to any setting.
